At some point during your college career, you probably had a particularly difficult class that made you question how you’d ever make it through the semester.
Whether the teacher didn’t explain things clearly, the students were disruptive and distracting, or the material itself was just plain difficult on its own, you still have to find a way to make it through the tough classes in order to earn that diploma.
Oftentimes, a few simple tips can have the power to turn a difficult class into a solid success. Here are a few helpful hints for surviving the tough courses.
In any class, studying can feel very overwhelming if you don’t know the topics that will be covered on tests. Add in the extra difficulty of a tough class, and you could find yourself in a seemingly impossible study situation.
Although some professors refuse to give out study guides, others are open to the idea, so it can’t hurt to ask. From detailed paper guides to verbal listings of test material during class, any type of study guide can be extremely helpful in difficult classes, especially if they’re given well in advance of the test.
Study groups are great for this reason: at least one group member is bound to have a good understanding of a topic other members find difficult.
However, some study groups are more helpful than others. If you’re forming a study group with your close friends, and you know for a fact that none of you understand certain topics, the study group probably won’t be very helpful to anyone.
Find someone in your class that seems to have a strong understanding of most all the course material and ask them to be a part of your group. A fellow student can often serve as an excellent teacher.
This is the hard part. Very few people enjoy reading pages upon pages of assigned readings, but not reading them can make an already difficult class that much harder.
Take a look at your syllabus, space out your assigned readings, and get ahead. This way, you won’t have to cram long readings into one or two days, and you can stress less knowing you are taking in most all the information you will need to succeed in the course.
Sure, we all wish some classes could be easier, but utilizing these tips can help you survive the tough courses and get you that much closer to your degree.
