How many people would love to attend school in Hawaii? Or even Paris? Learning can take place in several environments and areas, some people learn better in a more traditional classroom setting while others learn better in the field they can gain experience on location. While studying abroad isn’t perhaps a vacation or walk in the park it still holds numerous benefits academic wise, new experiences in addition to the advantages and disadvantages. Some benefits of studying abroad include education, exploring and taking on a new culture, and career opportunities. Every country has their own style or form of education and when you take your education abroad it allows for you to experience say Japan’s viewpoint of education and how education is viewed there compared to America. When you go abroad the culture, society and mannerism will be different than what your accustomed to back home; this in a way forces you to become immersed amongst the culture, people, mannerism and ways of life.

I feel that one of the prime ingredients to studying abroad is becoming immersed and one with the culture this helps you to better understand what you’re studying and learning. Going abroad allows you to take your education international and experience it on the field; for example if you’re studying fashion you would benefit from studying in Paris, France where you could experience fashion hands on. Depending on where you decide to study numerous career opportunities could present themselves as well as more opportunities upon your return home because you have more to offer than the average candidate. Studying abroad allows you to learn a new language and new customs but also shows employers that you’re ambitious and wiling to learn new things. The advantages of studying abroad range from gaining a new skill set, to being able to say you have an international education on your resume.

Now the downside to studying abroad is that it can become costly when paying for plane tickets, supplies and other necessities that may be needed. Being overwhelmed by customs and communications in a new place; learning a new language and their customs can be a lot to take in when you’re in an environment and new place away from home is also a downside when going abroad. You also should take into consideration that if there’s an emergency you’re a long way from so you have become familiar with local hospitals and doctors in the location or area you will be studying in and it’s also important to make sure that your health insurance is accepted wherever you going to study or make sure you have their equivalent to insurance in case something were to happen. Lastly one of the biggest disadvantages is that studying abroad can very dangerous depending on the location that you’re; it’s very important to do research on where you will be staying to ensure it’s a safe location or be knowable on what to do in case of emergencies.
